Best Over-Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones

Whether you commute on noisy public transit or work in an office with noisy colleagues, noise cancelling headphones can provide the sound buffer you need to keep your focus. We analyzed the comfort, sound quality, and the ability to block out continuous high-frequency sounds like restaurant chatter and short-duration incidental sounds like ringing phones or clacking keyboards.

Sony WH-1000XM5

When it comes to premium ANC headphones, Sony's flagship WH-1000XM5 is a top choice. The WH-1000XM5 came out in 2016 and is a great option for those who want to listen to their favorite music or podcasts without distractions. This latest version of the series marks the first major overhaul since its original release and offers many new and exciting features. Alongside sleek design and sustainable efforts (including the absence of plastic packaging) The headphones provide excellent noise cancellation, clear audio, and natural-sounding ambient audio.

If enabled, the WH-1000XM5's noise cancelling is simply unmatched. Strapping a pair to your head creates an entire cone of silence that will block out engine sounds on trains and subways, the whir of HVAC systems, and even the sounds of neighboring conversations. These headphones are also some of the best ANCs for blocking out low-frequency drones, bass hums and other noises.

Ambient Sound Control is another great feature. It adjusts the acoustic balance of the headphones depending on the surrounding. If you are at home listening to your favorite tunes, the WH1000XM5 will switch to an immersive experience. If you're walking on the street, they'll change to more focused profiles to make you more aware of your surroundings.

The earcups of the WH1000XM5 have a touch-sensitive gesture control on the right side. It is able to change tracks and play music. You can also pause or pause the music. You can also utilize the voice assistant to adjust volume as well as search for content and make hands-free phone calls. The headphones offer a rich stereo image and an even frequency response. They also have an incredibly precise group delay, which helps them maintain an even soundstage.

Another great feature is the possibility of connecting the WH-1000XM5s to two devices simultaneously. This is especially helpful for laptop users to listen to music while taking phone calls using your smartphone. They come with an integrated microphone and a USB-C charging port. They also come with a cable for direct playback. Battery life is solid at approximately 30 hours, which is enough to be enough to last the week of commuting, or an extended flight.

Bose QuietComfort 45

The Bose QuietComfort 45 is the most recent update to the premium headphones maker's flagship model. It was introduced in September 2021, and it's priced lower than the Sony WH1000XM4 by about PS320 / $329 / 439 AU$ compared to its 700-dollar sibling. It has the most active noise cancellation, and comes with features like voice assistant support, automatic pausing and automatic pause when you remove the headphones. The design is more comfortable than previous versions. There are some things to note, though. The buttons on the side of the earcups are now sensitive to pressure and require pressure to activate, so it may be difficult for some people to adjust to. While you can adjust ANC and switch to an "aware" mode which allows ambient sounds but you can't completely turn off the audio.

The headphones are an excellent choice for anyone who is looking for a pair of high-end headphones to wear in the train or plane or at home while working. They have a long battery life, excellent noise cancellation and clear audio. They also feature multipoint Bluetooth which means they can be connected to two devices at the same time and switch between them at a flick of a button. They also have an app that isn't quite as customizable as the other apps but it still has many useful features.

The QC45s also come with an active noise cancelling feature which is extremely efficient. In my testing it was slightly loud at times. The passive EQ modes, however, are more balanced and allow you to have greater control over the sound signature of your music. If you're listening to music that has a lot of cymbal shimmer you may find your headphones grating slightly, but it is fixable by reducing 3-20kHz in the EQ settings of your music player.

While some may be disappointed by the omission of some features, such as adjustable ANC/transparency or the EQ, as well as a slight decrease in the quality of calls, overall the QC45s are an excellent choice for anyone looking for top-tier ANC at a low cost. They are comfortable to wear and feature the USB-C charging port.

They also have a natural sense space and location which allows you to feel the vibrancy of every note and the movement of sounds around you.

The headphones are a bit heavier than the ones they compete with at 334g, but they're still comfortable to wear during long listening sessions. The headband is placed on top of your head without applying too much pressure. Additionally, the earcups are well-padded, making them extremely comfortable. They're also very lightweight. They can fold flat and be put away in the carrying case.

On the right earcup are the usual controls, including volume, playback, and power/pairing. You can toggle between neutral mode, and what Shure refers to as 'Environment Mode" by using a slider at the top. The Environment Mode lets more outside sounds to pass through. This is useful for those who need to remain aware of your surroundings. The controls are excellent, but there is some time between pressing the buttons and when it happens (i.e. if you play the play button while on a call you'll probably end up blaring your ears with music, instead of calling up your mom). The phones don't have microphones, but they do have an audio response by Google Assistant. Their mics are also great for filtering out background noise when calling.

The battery should last up to 20 hours for the majority of people. They do come with the USB cable that connects to your phone for charging, which isn't as convenient as using Bluetooth however it's a great feature to have, and it means you can play your music back when you're charging. They are also compatible with audio devices that have 2.5mm ports, which means you can take them with you on the road.

They do not stand out in public, however they feature an incredibly soft and comfortable fit that will appeal to the majority of ears. The small dimensions of these headphones and the carry case included make them ideal for taking on the road.

The ear cups are covered in leatherette, and offer excellent passive isolation. The headband has a lot of adjustability, and it is soft without feeling too bulky or slouchy. The headband is large enough to accommodate glasses wearers, which means they'll fit most people.

Monoprice ANC is a great choice and doesn't sound tinny as some other brands. It has a slight boost between 100-200Hz, giving the bass a more fuller sound. notes. This is evident in the first track of Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo with a full and clear response. They have a sharp drop in the higher frequencies above ten kHz, so cymbals and shakers won't sound as clear and crisp.

You can cycle through three ANC modes including medium, low and higher. The low mode is ideal for suppressing most ambient noise but will not block out traffic or loud conversations. The medium setting can be used in a variety of situations. The high setting will shield you from all other noises, except your music. The earcups with touch-sensitive controls are a little difficult to operate at first. Swiping up or down on the pad controls the volume, while tapping or shifting left or right alters the track. You can also double-tap to pause or answer a call. This system takes some practice to get used to, but once you are able to master the art of it, you'll be able to use it.
